Something funny happened with the Hulk. His book got cancelled after 6 issues despite being launched with Kirby on art before Ditko slotted in. But reading it here you see why. The stories are a bit dull and plodding. However, Hulk got shuffled over to Tales to Astonish, sharing the book with Giant Man of all people and consequently shrinking the monthly stories to a mere ten pages. Miraculously, this is when the book opens up. As if having the constraint keeps the basic dynamic of the book from becoming persistently stale. In particular the issues drawn by Kirby and inked by Bill Everett are nearly miraculous. All the better to look at here in black and white to better see Everett's lush ink line.
